How do emergency stop buttons work?

Emergency stop buttons are generally used to immediately stop the operation of machinery or equipment in case of emergency. When the emergency stop button is pressed, it immediately interrupts the power supply to the equipment, effectively halting its operation. Typically, this operation is achieved by breaking the circuit or sending a signal to the control system to shut down the machine. The emergency stop button switch is normally closed, but when the button is pressed, it mechanically opens the circuit, quickly terminating the power supply to the equipment. Some emergency stop buttons may also trigger other safety measures, such as activating alarms or initiating shutdown sequences, to prevent further danger.

How to connect emergency stop button

Emergency stop buttons typically come in two types: single-contact normally closed (NC) and one normally open and one normally closed (1NO1NC) types.

The connection method for a single-contact normally closed emergency stop button is as follows:

1. Connect the normally closed (NC) contact of the emergency stop button to the control circuit of the equipment, typically the input port of the control system.

2. Connect the common (COM) terminal of the emergency stop button to the power circuit of the equipment, connected to the main power supply.

3. When the emergency stop button is not pressed, the normally closed contact is connected to the common terminal, closing the circuit and allowing the equipment to operate normally. When the emergency stop button is pressed, the normally closed contact is disconnected from the common terminal, opening the circuit, sending a stop signal to the control system, and stopping the operation of the equipment.

Connection method for a one normally open and one normally closed emergency stop button:

1. Emergency stop buttons typically have two different output ports: one is the NO (normally open) port, and the other is the NC (normally closed) port.

2. Connect the NC port to the control circuit of the equipment, connected to the input port of the equipment.

3. Connect the NO port to the power circuit of the equipment, connected to the main power supply.

4. When the emergency stop button is not pressed, the NC port is connected to the COM (common) port, closing the circuit, while the NO port is disconnected from the COM port. When the emergency stop button is pressed, the NC port is disconnected from the COM port, opening the circuit, while the NO port is connected to the COM port, closing the circuit.

When connecting a normally closed emergency stop button or a one normally open and one normally closed emergency stop button, be sure to follow the installation manual of the equipment and relevant safety standards to ensure correct connection and operation, maximizing the safety of the equipment and operators.

How to reset emergency stop button?

Resetting an emergency stop button typically involves the following steps:

1. Resolve the emergency situation: Firstly, the emergency situation that triggered the emergency stop button must be resolved. This may involve fixing equipment malfunctions, clearing blockages, or addressing other issues.

2. Locate the emergency stop button: Locate the emergency stop button on the equipment, typically located in an easily accessible position such as the equipment control panel or console.

3. Press the button: Press and hold down the emergency stop button for a period of time until the emergency stop condition is manually released. Some emergency stop buttons may require key rotation, pulling, or rotating the head to reset.

4. Check the equipment: After resetting the emergency stop button, ensure that the equipment is in normal operating condition. Check if the equipment responds properly and ensure that no abnormal situations occur.

5. Resume operation: If everything is normal, the equipment can be restarted to resume normal operation. Ensure that all safety measures are restored before restarting the equipment.

Emergency stop switches are widely used in many aspects of life, including industrial equipment panels, elevators, escalators, amusement rides, medical devices, treadmills, and other equipment.

Where is the emergency stop button on an escalator?

1. Next to the handrail: There is usually a conspicuous red emergency stop button next to the handrail of the escalator, which passengers can use in case of emergency.

2. At both ends of the escalator: Emergency stop buttons are typically installed at the starting and ending points of the escalator, allowing quick cessation of the escalator's operation when necessary.

3. Control room or control panel: Some escalators may have emergency stop buttons installed in the control room or on the control panel, for use by maintenance personnel or operators.
